Bateman won his first race on July 11th over seven furlongs, twice in August was stepped up to race over 1m2f and then 1m1f. He started as favourite on both occasions but finished down the field. He returned to a 1m distance when going to Newcastle to contest the Digital Racecard.com handicap. In the large fourteen runner field he was content to stay at the rear, and only started moving through the field from 2f out. Joining the leader, who finished runner up, at the 1f mark he took the lead close home winning cleverly by a neck. Being by Ten Sovereigns he is finding the mile to be his maximum distance. Racing over a mile or indeed seven furlongs he should win more races off his present handicap mark.
